Infectious Diseases
Infectious diseases are diseases caused by different pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, and are capable of affecting various systems and organs of the body. These diseases can manifest as minor skin infections or serious systemic infections such as sepsis.
Common infectious diseases include bacterial pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and tuberculosis; viral infections such as influenza, AIDS, dengue fever, and COVID-19; fungal infections such as candidiasis and ringworm; and parasitic infections such as malaria and toxoplasmosis.
Treatment of infectious diseases usually requires the use of appropriate antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, or antiparasitic agents, and vaccination is an effective means of preventing certain infectious diseases. In the face of the challenge of drug-resistant microorganisms, the development of new drugs and the improvement of existing drugs are essential for the treatment and control of infectious diseases.
Progress in drug development is described below:
- Antimicrobial drugs: Research has focused on the development of novel antibiotics to combat the problem of drug resistance, exploring new molecular entities and mechanisms of action, including novel variants of β-lactams, macrolides, quinolones and carbapenem antibiotics.
- Antivirals: R&D advances include targeting viral replicative enzymes, viral proteases, inhibition of viral entry into host cells, and blockade of viral release, e.g., oseltamivir for influenza and reverse transcriptase and protease inhibitors for HIV.
- Antifungal drugs: R&D focuses on addressing drug resistance and developing new drugs to interfere with fungal cell wall synthesis, affect fungal membrane integrity and inhibit fungal DNA replication, e.g. echinocandins and pyrimidine analogs.
- Antiparasitic drugs: Therapeutic research is devoted to interfering with parasite metabolic pathways, cellular structure, and altering host-parasite interactions.
- Immunomodulators and biologics: Aimed at enhancing host immune responses or reducing autoimmune responses and inflammation, including interferons, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors, and other biologics.
- Vaccines: Vaccine development is key to preventing infectious diseases and includes novel vaccine designs, such as mRNA and viral vector vaccines against COVID-19, as well as improvements to existing vaccines.
