World Osteoporosis Day

World Osteoporosis Day is celebrated on 20 October each year and was officially established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1998, with the aim of spreading awareness of osteoporosis and preventing and reducing the incidence of osteoporotic fractures. 2024 World Osteoporosis Day is themed ‘Say no to fragile bones’, encouraging people of all ages to pay attention to and protect their bone health.

Osteoporosis is closely related to sarcopenia and the two often occur together, increasing the risk of falls and fractures.

The causes of osteoporosis are complex and varied, including genetic factors, changes in hormone levels, lifestyle habits and the effects of disease. According to statistics, there are currently about 200 million osteoporosis patients worldwide, and among people over 50 years old, the prevalence of osteoporosis in women is about 33%, while that in men is about 20%. With aging becoming more and more serious, the prevalence of osteoporosis tends to increase year by year. Therefore, it is crucial to raise the awareness of osteoporosis and strengthen the research and prevention of osteoporosis.
