Since 2008, the International Thyroid Federation (ITF) has designated May 25th of each year as World Thyroid Day, with the week containing this day observed as "International Thyroid Awareness Week." This initiative aims to elevate public understanding of the importance of thyroid health and foster global efforts in researching and preventing thyroid diseases. The theme for 2024 is "Thyroid Diseases Are NCDs".
The thyroid gland, a small, butterfly-shaped organ situated at the front of the neck, plays a pivotal role in regulating metabolic rate, influencing growth and development, as well as emotional balance, despite its modest size. Its hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), reach every cell in the body, ensuring efficient energy utilization.
Thyroid diseases encompass a range of conditions affecting thyroid function, broadly classified into two categories: those causing overproduction or underproduction of thyroid hormones due to functional abnormalities, and those involving structural changes to the gland, such as nodules or tumors.
Investigating the causes of thyroid diseases, researchers have found complex interactions involving genetics, environment, and autoimmune reactions. Graves' disease occurs when the immune system attacks the thyroid, causing overactivity, while Hashimoto's thyroiditis sees the thyroid damaged by the immune system, leading to hormone insufficiency. Additionally, incorrect iodine consumption and exposure to certain chemicals are recognized risk factors.
In recent years, research and development in thyroid disease treatments have centered on the creation of more targeted and less side-effect-prone medications, particularly for autoimmune thyroid diseases and thyroid cancer. This includes the development of novel antagonists targeting TSH receptor antibodies in Graves' disease to precisely inhibit overactive thyroid stimulation; in thyroid eye disease, Tepezza's successful introduction has set a new benchmark for symptom relief through IGF-1R inhibition, spurring exploration into additional innovative targets. Furthermore, research focuses on targeted therapies for thyroid cancer, such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors aimed at VEGFR and BRAF mutations.
CUSABIO consistently dedicates itself to providing high-quality research reagents such as proteins, antibodies, and ELISA kits to researchers. Given the criticality and urgency of thyroid disease research, we have specially curated a list of more than 20 popular targets and related reagent products pertinent to thyroid disease studies below for your selection.
