PTEN

PTEN, phosphatase and tensin homolog, also known as MMAC1 or TEP1, is a well - studied protein. It acts as a tumor suppressor by dephosphorylating phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5) - trisphosphate, negatively regulating the PI3K - AKT - mTOR signaling pathway. This pathway is crucial for cell growth, proliferation, and survival.
Abnormalities in PTEN are associated with various diseases, especially cancers like breast, prostate, and endometrial cancers. In drug development, efforts are ongoing to target the PTEN - related pathways. Some inhibitors of downstream components in the PI3K - AKT - mTOR pathway are in clinical trials, aiming to restore normal cell functions disrupted by PTEN dysregulation.
