PKM

PKM, or pyruvate kinase M, is an enzyme encoded by the PKM gene and is crucial in cellular glycolysis. It catalyzes the conversion of phosphoenolpyruvic acid (PEP) and ADP to ATP and pyruvic acid, a pivotal step in glycolysis. PKM is found in both the nucleus and cytoplasm, with its active form being a tetramer. Abnormalities in PKM expression or activity are linked to various diseases, especially cancer, where its regulation is associated with tumor cell metabolic reprogramming and proliferation. PKM is also considered a potential target for research into metabolic and inflammatory diseases.
