FMR1

The FMR1 gene encodes the Fragile X Mental Retardation Protein (FMRP), which structurally binds RNA and associates with multiprotein complexes. Functionally, FMRP regulates post-transcriptional gene expression, facilitating mRNA transport, translation, and localization. It plays a crucial role in synaptic function, neuronal development, and learning and memory processes. While the direct signaling pathways involving FMR1 are not fully understood, FMRP likely functions within a complex network of intracellular interactions related to neuronal activity and cellular growth. Mutations in FMR1, such as the expansion of the CGG trinucleotide repeat, can lead to Fragile X Syndrome, disrupting FMRP function and cellular processes. Therefore, FMR1 is a crucial gene in maintaining normal cellular function and preventing neurological disorders.
