CDH17

CDH17, Cadherin-17, alias LI-cadherin. CDH17 is a member of the 7D-cadherin family whose extracellular domain consists of seven repetitive sequences, EC1-EC7, and whose intracellular domain contains 18-20 amino acids. CDH17 functions as a polypeptide transporter and cellular adhesion molecule to maintain the integrity of epithelial tissue. CDH17's adhesion mechanism differs from that of typical cadherins in that it does not require complexation with α- and β-catenins and is able to maintain adhesive function without interacting with other cytoplasmic components.
CDH17 is highly expressed in normal human cells only in the small intestine and colon, and is either not expressed or lowly expressed in other tissues such as the liver, heart, and kidney. However, in tumor tissues, CDH17 is overexpressed in gastric, pancreatic, hepatic, esophageal, cholangiocarcinomas and colorectal cancers, and its aberrant expression is closely associated with tumor formation and metastasis. CDH17 is a potential diagnostic marker and therapeutic target for malignant tumors of the digestive system.
