Target Background

Function(From Uniprot)
Phosphorylates oma-1, a regulator of the oocyte-to-embryo transition, enabling its degradation. Phosphorylates skn-1, preventing it from accumulating in nuclei and thus inhibiting phase II gene expression in the oxidative stress defense. Involved in mesendoderm specification and mitotic spindle orientation in EMS blastomeres. Thought to be a branch point in these processes as proteins downstream are not required. Negatively regulates Wnt signaling in vulval precursor cells and acts as a Wnt-independent repressor of med-1 and med-2 in the C lineage inhibiting mesoderm development. Required for normal lifespan and LiCl-induced lifespan extension.
Gene References into Functions
  1. In C. elegans germline stem cells, loss of gsk-3 results in reduced germline stem cell proliferation without changes in differentiation or responsiveness to GLP-1/Notch signaling. PMID:29695611
  2. Rearrangement of mitotic spindles requires the GSK-3 kinase. Apoptotic cell clearance and migration of the distal tip cell require the GSK-3 kinase. PMID:20126385
  3. (i) GSK-3 inhibits SKN-1 activity in the intestine, (ii) the phase II response integrates multiple regulatory signals, and (iii), by inhibiting this response, GSK-3 may influence redox conditions. PMID:16251270
  4. GSK3 converts OMA-1 and OMA-2 from being key regulators of oocyte maturation to key regulators of 1-cell embryo development PMID:16289132
