SCN1A

SCN1A is a crucial ion channel protein composed of a large pore-forming α-subunit and multiple small β-subunits, primarily expressed in the brain and peripheral nerves. As part of the voltage-gated sodium channel, SCN1A plays a pivotal role in regulating neurotransmitter release and mechanosensory pain perception. The voltage-sensing domain and pore of its structure jointly regulate the depolarization process, affecting neuronal excitability. When neurons are stimulated, the SCN1A channel opens, triggering action potentials and participating in the transmission of neural signals. However, mutations in SCN1A can lead to abnormal channel function, which may subsequently cause neurological disorders such as epilepsy.
