PDE4, phosphodiesterase 4, is an important member of the phosphodiesterase family and is encoded by four homologous genes, giving rise to four isoforms, PDE4A, PDE4B, PDE4C, and PDE4D.PDE4 is expressed predominantly in immune cells and a variety of inflammatory cells, and is involved in various physiological and pathological processes through its catalytic active centre, which contains a metal region and a hydrophobic region, and by regulating the concentration of cAMP to trigger a downstream phosphorylation cascade.
