ALPI

The gene ALPI encodes alkaline phosphatase, intestinal (ALPI), a hydrolase enzyme primarily expressed in the small intestine epithelium. Its main function is dephosphorylating various substrates, aiding in nutrient absorption and mucosal barrier maintenance. ALPI is also known as intestinal alkaline phosphatase or IAP.
ALPI modulates gut microbiota homeostasis and inflammation by dephosphorylating lipopolysaccharides, thereby regulating TLR4-NF-κB signaling pathways. Dysregulation is linked to inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Current research explores ALPI supplementation as a potential therapy for gut inflammation and sepsis, with preclinical studies showing promising results in reducing intestinal permeability and systemic inflammation.
