Ca(2+)-dependent receptor for myeloid cells that binds to carbohydrates on neutrophils and monocytes. Mediates the interaction of activated endothelial cells or platelets with leukocytes. The ligand recognized is sialyl-Lewis X. Mediates rapid rolling of leukocyte rolling over vascular surfaces during the initial steps in inflammation through interaction with SELPLG.

Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from different exons in selectin SELP, two in selectin SELL and one in selectin SELE were taken forward to genotyping in 337 Holstein Friesian heifers using PCR-RFLP. PMID:28419109
SELP mediates the attachment of peripheral blood leukocytes to endothelium and provides novel evidence that its high polymorphism is likely to affect biological function. This may potentially influence leukocyte migration and fertility, both key to successful performance in dairy cows. PMID:27663375
