UCP are mitochondrial transporter proteins that create proton leaks across the inner mitochondrial membrane, thus uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis. As a result, energy is dissipated in the form of heat.

UCPs do have uncoupling properties when expressed in mitochondria but that uncoupling by UCP1 or UCP2 does not prevent acute substrate-driven endothelial cell superoxide as effluxed from mitochondria respiring in vitro. PMID:15339748
