Target Background

Function(From Uniprot)
Chemoattractant. Activates the C-X-C chemokine receptor cxcr4 to induce a rapid and transient rise in the level of intracellular calcium ions, and chemotaxis. Signaling with cxcr4 mediates the directional movement of mesodermal cells during gastrulation (Ref.2). Binds to the allosteric site (site 2) of integrins and activates them in a cxcr4-independent manner.
Gene References into Functions
  1. These findings support the conservation of sdf-1alpha signaling in vertebrate somite morphogenesis; however, the precise mechanism by which this signaling pathway influences somite morphogenesis is different between the fish and the frog. PMID:24357195
  2. SDF-1/CXCR4 chemokine signaling is involved in the migration and survival or in the differentiation of PGCs in Xenopus PMID:19770040
  3. A significant increase of stromal cell-derived factor-1alpha and CXCR4 was observed in protein extracts of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies in comparison with normal controls. PMID:15019705
  4. SDF-1 signaling is necessary for migrations of massive numbers of cells during gastrulation. PMID:17239342

Tissue Specificity
Isoform alpha is expressed throughout the inner deep cells of the blastocoel roof during gastrula stage embryos. Isoform beta is expressed in the developing central nervous system (CNS) of embryos; at stages 21-23, up-regulated in the anterior of the embr
