Target Background

Function(From Uniprot)
G protein-coupled receptor that probably associates with the patched protein (PTCH) to transduce the hedgehog's proteins signal. Binding of sonic hedgehog (SHH) to its receptor patched is thought to prevent normal inhibition by patched of smoothened (SMO). Required for the accumulation of KIF7, GLI2 and GLI3 in the cilia. Interacts with DLG5 at the ciliary base to induce the accumulation of KIF7 and GLI2 at the ciliary tip for GLI2 activation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. This study characterizes, for the first time, the transcriptional response of cardiomyocytes to Shh and establishes a critical role for Smo coupling to Gi in Hh signaling in the normal and ischemic myocardium PMID:24816261
  2. The expression of Shh, Smo and Gli1 at the protein and mRNA level in hepatocytes of rats with chronic fluorosis can be increased by fluoride and may be inhibited by cyclopamine. PMID:24388991
  3. Ptch1 and Smo are predominantly localized in the postsynaptic side of the synapses, a distribution pattern similar to that found in hippocampal neurons PMID:22477363
  4. In young rat hippocampal neurons, Smo is present in the processes and growth cones. In mature rat hippocampal neurons, Smo is located predominately in dendrites, dendritic spines, and postsynaptic sites. PMID:21618238
  5. Shh and Smo are upregulated in a time-dependent manner in retinas exposed to ocular hypertension, and Shh has neuroprotective effects on damaged RGCs in a rat chronic hypertension model. PMID:20071678
  6. Facial nerve axotomy upregulates Sonic hedgehog (Shh) and its receptor Smoothened (Smo) in facial motor neurons of adult rats, whereas facial nerve axotomy does not upregulate mRNA of Shh or Smo in neonatal rats. PMID:15356205
