Thiol protease which is believed to participate in intracellular degradation and turnover of proteins. Cleaves matrix extracellular phosphoglycoprotein MEPE. Involved in the solubilization of cross-linked TG/thyroglobulin in the thyroid follicle lumen. Has also been implicated in tumor invasion and metastasis.

Findings showed that CTSB facilitates adipogenesis, and its effect is associated with fibronectin degradation and Wnt/b-catenin signaling pathway. PMID:24878992
CTSB may be required to remodel endometrial and placental tissues for close apposition between maternal and fetal vasculatures and to facilitate transplacental transport of gases, micronutrients (amino acids, glucose), and macromolecules (proteins). PMID:20107207
