Target Background

Function(From Uniprot)
Acts as a transcriptional activator. Involved in neurogenesis. Plays important roles in the early stage of organogenesis of the CNS, as well as during dorsal spinal cord development and maturation of the cerebellum. Involved in the spatial distribution of mossy fiber (MF) neurons within the pontine gray nucleus (PGN). Plays a role in the regulation of MF axon pathway choice. Promotes MF migration towards ipsilaterally-located cerebellar territories. May have a role in shear flow mechanotransduction in osteocytes. Retains nuclear GLI1 and GLI3 in the cytoplasm. Binds to the minimal GLI-consensus sequence 5'-TGGGTGGTC-3'.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Geminin and Zic1 could cooperatively activate the expression of several shared targets encoding transcription factors that control neurogenesis, neural plate patterning, and neuronal differentiation. PMID:27881878
  2. Zic1 and Zic2 proteins are essential to control the balance between two defined neuron types in the postnatal forebrain. PMID:28972122
  3. Brn2-Zic1 axis is essential to specify neural fate in retinoic-acid-treated embryonic stem cells. PMID:25991548
  4. Zic1 and Zic2 are required for coordinating mature neuronal gene expression patterns. PMID:25849986
  5. Association with DNA-bound Pax3 strengthens the ability of both Zic1 and Gli2 to transactivate Myf5 in the epaxial somite. PMID:24036067
  6. Zic1 and Zic4 have both Shh-dependent and -independent roles during cerebellar development and multiple developmental disruptions underlie Zic1/4-related Dandy-walker malformation. PMID:21307096
  7. Myf5 activation in newly forming somites is delayed in Zic2 mutant embryos until the time of Zic1 activation, and both Zic2 and Myf5 require noggin for their activation PMID:21211521
  8. Zic1, a neural developmental transcription factor, plays an important role in shear flow mechanotransduction in osteocytes. PMID:20354137
  9. findings suggest that Zic1 controls the expansion of neuronal precursors by inhibiting the progression of neuronal differentiation PMID:11944941
  10. The functions of Zic1 and Zic3 may be essential to increasing neural cell numbers regionally in the medial telencephalon and to proper mediolateral patterning of the telencephalon. PMID:17507568
  11. This study reveal a new role for Zic1 as a cell-autonomous regulator of key aspects of nucleus formation and axon pathway choice in the ventral brain stem. PMID:19303920

Subcellular Location
Nucleus. Cytoplasm. Note=Localizes in the cytoplasm in presence of MDFIC overexpression.
Protein Families
GLI C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in osteoblasts (at protein level). Expressed in the CNS. A high level expression is seen in the cerebellum, while a low level expression is seen in the olfactory bulb, diencephalon, and brainstem. Expressed in lumbar spine and iliac crest.
