Target Background

Function(From Uniprot)
Catalyzes the transfer of sulfate to the C2-position of selected hexuronic acid residues within the maturing heparan sulfate (HS). 2-O-sulfation within HS, particularly of iduronate residues, is essential for HS to participate in a variety of high-affinity ligand-binding interactions and signaling processes. Required for metanephric development of kidney formation, suggesting that 2-O-sulfation within HS is essential for signaling between ureteric bud and metanephric mesenchyme. Mediates 2-O-sulfation of both L-iduronyl and D-glucuronyl residues.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Inactivation of uronyl 2-O-sulfotransferase in endothelial cells (Hs2st), an enzyme that acts downstream from Ndst1, results in enhanced neutrophil recruitment in several models of acute inflammation. PMID:22791291
  2. Plasma lipoprotein clearance depends on specific subclasses of sulfate groups and not on overall charge of the chains. PMID:19889634
  3. The phenotype of Hs2st(-/-) mutant kidneys suggests that signalling between two tissues, ureteric bud and metanephric mesenchyme, is disrupted. PMID:12975615
  4. mice homozygous for a null mutation in Hs2st indicated reduction in the thickness of the embryonic cerebral cortex; critical role for 2-O-sulphation of heparan sulphate proteoglycan in regulating cell proliferation during cerebral cortex development PMID:14654220
  5. Hs2st and/or Hs6st1 expression coincides with Slit expression domains at locations where retinal ganglion cell(RGC) axons make navigation errors in Hs2st-/- and Hs6st1-/- mutants, and Hs6st1-/-RGC axons are less sensitive to Slit2 repulsion. PMID:16807321
