Target Background

Function(From Uniprot)
Growth factor of the TGF-beta superfamily that plays essential roles in many developmental processes, including cartilage and bone formation or neurogenesis. Initiates the canonical BMP signaling cascade by associating with type I receptor BMPR1A and type II receptor BMPR2. In turn, BMPR1A propagates signal by phosphorylating SMAD1/5/8 that travel to the nucleus and act as activators and repressors of transcription of target genes. Can also signal through non-canonical pathway such as MAPK p38 signaling cascade to promote chondrogenic differentiation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Data conclude that BMP-5 has stage-specific role to play during MC3T3E1 osteoblast differentiation in part by autocrine p38/Runx2/COLIA1 signaling. PMID:28497879
  2. Bmp5 gene thus contains an "injury response" control region that is distinct from embryonic enhancers, and that is activated by multiple types of injury in adult animals PMID:25886903
  3. Early endothelial outgrowth cells act protective in diabetic nephropathy, and such effects are significantly stimulated by BMP-5 PMID:25080521
  4. BMP-5 acts as a potent endothelial outgrowth cells agonist in murine AKI in the short and mid to long term PMID:23678046
  5. Bone morphogenetic protein 5 regulates the number of keratinocyte stem cells from the skin of mice. PMID:21179110
  6. Data indicate that locus coeruleus development requires either Bmp5 or Bmp7, and one is able to compensate for the loss of the other. PMID:20493948
  7. Variability in gene expression of BMP5 may be an important contributor to osteoarthritis genetic susceptibility PMID:20021689
  8. BMP5 is required not only for skeletal patterning during embryonic development, but also for bone response and remodeling to mechanical stimulation at specific anatomic sites in the skeleton PMID:18380899
  9. Bmp5 is expressed in many skeletal precursors and different enhancers control expression in individual bones. PMID:19096511
