Target Background

Function(From Uniprot)

Plays an essential role in viral DNA replication by acting as the polymerase accessory subunit. Associates with the viral polymerase to increase its processivity and forms high-affinity direct interactions with DNA. Facilitates the origin-binding protein UL9 loading onto DNA thus increasing its ability to assemble into a functional complex capable of unwinding duplex DNA.

UL42 plays a remarkably essential roleduring coupled activity; in the absence of UL42, the polymerase still binds at the replication fork but in a manner that is incompetent with respect to coupled helicase-polymerase activity. PMID:28505413
Data suggest that UL30/UL42 is a single bifunctional protein exhibiting both polymerase and exonuclease activities; UL30/UL42 also exhibits two completely independent active sites for these activities. PMID:26836009
