Target Background

Function(From Uniprot)
Control of topological states of DNA by transient breakage and subsequent rejoining of DNA strands. Topoisomerase II makes double-strand breaks. Essential during mitosis and meiosis for proper segregation of daughter chromosomes. During meiosis, it disrupts heterochromatic connections between achiasmate and chiasmate homologs after spindle assembly so that chromosomes can separate at prometaphase I. During mitosis, it functions in the separation of sister chromatids by establishing amphitelic kinetochore attachments in mitotic spindles. May have a role in chromatin condensation and chromosome structure. May be involved in X-chromosome dosage compensation, perhaps by modifying the topological state of compensated genes. Regulates activity of the gypsy chromatin insulator complex by binding to mod(mdg4) and preventing its degradation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The Top2-Mus101 interaction is important for maintaining the fidelity of chromosome segregation during mitosis. PMID:27129233
  2. our results suggest that the previously observed discrepancies in the chromosomal phenotypes elicited by Topo II downregulation in vertebrates might depend on slight differences in Topo II concentration and/or activity PMID:25340516
  3. These data suggest both that Topoisomerase II is involved in the resolution of heterochromatic DNA entanglements during meiosis I and that these entanglements must be resolved in order to complete meiosis. PMID:25340780
  4. Topo II is required to prevent Mod(mdg4)2.2 degradation and, consequently, to stabilize Su(Hw) insulator-mediated chromatin organization PMID:21304601
  5. Topo II does have some role in mitotic chromatin condensation PMID:14600258
