In eubacteria ppGpp (guanosine 3'-diphosphate 5'-diphosphate) is a mediator of the stringent response that coordinates a variety of cellular activities in response to changes in nutritional abundance. This enzyme catalyzes the formation of pppGpp which is then hydrolyzed to form ppGpp, it is probably the hydrolysis activity that is required for optimal growth.

The authors discovered that ComGA interacts with RelA and that the ComGA-dependent inhibition of rRNA synthesis is largely bypassed in strains that cannot synthesize the alarmone (p)ppGpp. PMID:25899641
The authors found that transcription of all rrn operons from their P1 promoters was drastically reduced in the relA mutant while this was almost completely restored in the yjbM and ywaC suppressor mutants. PMID:19447912
