SMPD1

SMPD1 encodes acid sphingomyelinase (ASM), also known as acid sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase. ASM is responsible for hydrolyzing sphingomyelin into ceramide and phosphorylcholine. It participates in multiple signal transduction pathways, like the stress - activated pathways, playing a key role in cell growth, apoptosis, and inflammation.
Mutations in SMPD1 are linked to Niemann - Pick disease types A and B, which are lysosomal storage disorders. Regarding drug development, research focuses on enzyme replacement therapy and small - molecule modulators to correct the enzyme deficiency or enhance its function, aiming to improve the prognosis of related diseases.
