SLC6A3

The SLC6A3 gene encodes the dopamine transporter, a member of the sodium and chloride-dependent neurotransmitter transporter family. Structurally, it consists of 12 transmembrane domains and exhibits specific glycosylation characteristics. The dopamine transporter is primarily responsible for the transport and reuptake of dopamine, thereby precisely regulating its concentration in the synaptic cleft and influencing neural signal transmission. Additionally, the 3'UTR of the SLC6A3 gene contains a variable number tandem repeat sequence, and variations in the number of repeats are associated with the risk of developing various neurological and psychiatric disorders. In terms of signaling pathways, the dopamine transporter indirectly affects dopamine receptor-mediated signaling processes by modulating dopamine concentrations. Abnormal function of the dopamine transporter may lead to disruptions in neural signal transmission, ultimately triggering related diseases.
