PINK1

PINK1, also known as PTEN-induced kinase 1, is a serine/threonine kinase that plays a crucial role in maintaining mitochondrial function and preventing neurodegeneration. It is primarily localized to the outer mitochondrial membrane and interacts with Parkin to regulate mitophagy, the selective degradation of damaged mitochondria. PINK1's activity is regulated by its phosphorylation status, which is influenced by various cellular stresses. Dysfunctional PINK1 is associated with Parkinson's disease, where it contributes to the accumulation of damaged mitochondria and the subsequent neurodegeneration. PINK1 deficiency has been linked to the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease, particularly through the disruption of mitophagy and the accumulation of damaged mitochondria in neurons.
